Celebrating Spring at Austin Farm Sanctuary with Baby Rescues and Our Liveliest Season

Updated: Apr 5

There’s a certain aura at the sanctuary this time of year.

Our pastures are starting to pop as the grass grows. The land gets soft, bright, and alive again. The cows have their heads down grazing. The pigs are either wallowing or stretched out in the sun. And, over in the Med Barn, there’s a baby gaining her eyesight and prepping to get "the zoomies" for the first time.

This time of year holds a lot at once. It’s beautiful, and at the same time, it’s one of our most trying of seasons.

Babies arrive needing everything from us.

Sweet Muffin here came to us at 5 days old. She was near death, blind and fragile. Right now, her world is small. Bottles, bedding, and hands that check on her constantly. Soon, however, she will be skipping happily through the pasture.

Nearby, Graham and Marshmallow are a couple steps ahead in their own healing. Stronger. Playful. Starting to feel like themselves.

Spring is that contrast. Early mornings and late nights. Worry and relief. It’s watching a life stabilize, then stretch, then start to play.

The Heart of Spring: Community

This is the time of year when the sanctuary fills back up in a different way. The humans arrive in lovely abundance.

Interns start up and step into long days doing meaningful work. Volunteers come out and find their rhythm again. Families walk the pastures with their kids, meeting residents up close for the first time. Private tours and the Airstream are booked most weekends. Each day, we get to see someone pause with a hand resting on a cow longer than they expected or laughing as a goat insists on more snacks.

Join Us This Spring!

There are a lot of ways to be a part of Austin Farm Sanctuary this season.

If you’ve been meaning to come out, this is a good time. We can't wait to see y'all!

A Season of Kindness

Spring also brings Easter and other Spring celebrations that are centered around gathering, tradition, and food. Sadly, it’s also a time when baby animals are often part of the meal.

We’re spending our days caring for babies like Muffin. Watching them stabilize. Watching them start to feel safe. Watching them become themselves.

When given the chance to, these babies choose life. They choose family. They choose to run and exist in a world where they are not food, they are free.

There are ways to celebrate that align with that kind of compassion. Meals, traditions, and moments that feel even more meaningful when harm isn't part of them.
